The historic White Bay Hotel on Victoria Road was completely gutted by fire yesterday, causing traffic chaos. The fire began around 12 o’clock on Friday night and took firefighters several hours to bring it under control. Meanwhile Friday night traffic between the city and Victoria Road was severly disrupted.
Once the fire had been extinguished, engineers feared the charred shell of the White Bay hotel could collapse on passing vehicles. They called in heavy machinery to completely flatten the landmark building which was constructed in 1916.
The White Bay Hotel had been a favourite pub of nearby dockside workers and employees of the coal-powered electric power station that stands behind it. The hotel closed its doors in 1992 after the power station was shut down.
After its closure, the empty pub became the site of some of Sydney’s largest and most expensive billboards, which shouted their advertising messages to commuters coming to and from the Anzac Bridge .
The NSW Police suspect arson and are now investigating.
