Circus comes to town

Just when you thought that the whole APEC hoo-ha could not get any more like a circus - now it has become a zoo with a special Australian wildlife display planned for the participants’ wives and girlfriends. Private of course - no one else allowed- as are the fireworks display with us ordinary citizens banned from vantage points. These spots around the harbour are familiar to most Sydneysiders every New Years Eve and other special occasions when it is deemed safe enough for us to watch pyrotechnics light the sky.
But it seems these vantage points, and other areas close to the APEC action, are public only when it suits the powers-that-be. We can understand that protecting the safety of visiting dignitaries at any time is important - that goes without saying - but when it impinges on the basic freedom of Australians, we have a right to be mightily pissed off (pardon this distinctly Aussie term but it is time to be patriotic). Our parents fought hard for freedom in this country and people from around the world have found sanctuary in the safety of a supposedly-free country. Many came from countries where democracy wasn’t even a word and now, in Australia, it is only a word.
This country should not belong to any government- it is the peoples’ domain. But, hey, we have been given the day off, so fire up the barbecue, put on a few snags (sausages), crack open a can of beer or two and celebrate this great land of ours.
Cheers, she’ll be right, mate.
